Canon point: Post-game, after getting Vera Misham's verdict.
Personality: Apollo generally plays the "straight-man" in his daily life situations (also known by the trope "The Comically Serious.") His views of the world tend to be straight-forward and pessimistic, especially when contrasted with the extreme wackiness he's surrounded by in Phoenix and Trucy Wright. To that end, he can often come across as sardonic and perhaps a little bit mean, constantly criticizing others in his mind. (Though to be fair, the mockery is generally justified.)
In contrast to that, however, Apollo is a very kind man and given to caring about others, which was most likely part of his motivation in becoming a defense attorney (the other part can probably be attributed to idolization of Phoenix Wright when he was a lawyer.) No matter how weird he may think his clients are, he does care for them and wants to help set them on the right path, regardless of how many sarcastic remarks he makes.
Most particularly, he holds strong feelings for Trucy who constantly helps him through all of his work, sharing with him a secret "power" and adding splashes of color to what is otherwise an ordinary life. This may be due in part to the fact that she considers him family when he (believes) he lost that years ago. This has led to a fierce devotion to her, causing him to care deeply about her feelings and putting up with her quirkiness despite his own personal thoughts on the matter. (Though he isn't exactly lacking in that department either.) In short, while Apollo seems blunt and cynical, he is serious about his work and is extremely sincere about his clients and friends.
On the flipside of things, Apollo is extremely emotional, given to bursts of both temper and, more egregiously, embarrassment, creating the oddest noises of dismay when the case he's trying to build is unraveled by one "glimmerous fop" known as Prosecutor Klavier Gavin. To that end, he can sometimes become too excited when he finds he's on the right track during a trial, giving him an almost childish sense of enthusiasm, but in a way that is more endearing that annoying. In that sense, he is extremely determined and single-minded when pursuing his goals, never reconsidering his pursuit of the truth.
Overall, Apollo seems to be caught between adulthood and still being a child. He shows a clear capability of being independent, able to take care of and think for himself but is also constantly uncertain, second-guessing himself all the time to the point he might doubt his own skills as a lawyer. He has the passion of someone who loves his job but fails to exercise restraint, often overworking himself before stopping. (Mostly in the training of his "Chords of Steel," practicing his yells until his voice is raspy.) Furthermore, he seeks to work together with the person who is technically his "enemy" in the courtroom, sharing information and believing that they both want the same thing. A fact that was founded on naive trust but miraculously seems to be true. In the end, that kindness might get him bitten but for now it is what continues to drive him to defend in the court.
Powers/Abilities: As your (mostly) typical human being, Apollo's skills are what most would expect. He seems to be in adequate shape given that he rides a bicycle everywhere he goes but isn't particularly impressive in terms of stature or body strength. (Proven by when he punched another man and the man didn't seem all that particularly bothered about it.) That being said, it is logical to assume he has a high stamina and can hold pace with most joggers for an extended period of time. Beyond that, however, his physical abilities are rather negligible.
In terms of magical ability, Apollo doesn't have anything one could consider flashy. He doesn't speak to ghosts, cast spells or sense disturbances in the force. Rather, he merely has an extremely strong sense for tension in other people. His eyes are excellent at "perceiving" tells another person gives off when stressed, often indicating lies or secrets they wish to keep hidden which grants him unusually acute insight into other peoples' minds. The ability itself, while recognized consciously, occurs within the subconscious section of his mind and can only really be triggered by other people's anxiety. Generally, in response to their tension, Apollo reflexively tenses up himself without realizing it, which causes his unique bracelet to tighten against his wrist when his muscles flex. If Apollo wasn't wearing his bracelet, while he might get the inkling of something amiss, it would be a great deal harder to pinpoint the when and where.
The only other thing of note in this category is his voice. Routinely called out for his rather loud and impressive vocal chords, Apollo is able to reach a wide range of volumes with his speech (though mostly in the high section as opposed to the low) and doesn't seem to even be aware of the problems this might present. His voice has caused complaints in court, from the neighbors, his half-sister and remarks of amusement from both of the Gavin brothers. Despite all of this evidence supporting the fact that he really needs to lower his volume button, he continues to train his "Chords of Steel" and considers his ability to project his voice a thing of pride.
Prose sample: His eyes were burning.
With a quiet sigh, Apollo brought his hand up to his face and rubbed at them before pinching the bridge of his nose and letting out a quiet sigh. As he did this, his hand slowly lowered the paper he had been holding and he sat back, stretching one arm towards the ceiling while the other curled around the back of his head and eased his shoulder muscles, letting the tension flow out of them. Just how long had he been at this anyway…?
With a quick glance at the clock on his desk, he winced when he noted the time. Nearly 6 hours... He thought dispassionately as he leaned back and stared at the mess that was his desk. Scattered papers, various reports, photographs, a list of “evidence” (items gathered that may or may not be useful) collected thus far… and all of it buried under mountains of investigative police reports.
Idly he reached towards one untouched corner of his desk and picked up his coffee cup, already knowing it was empty and checking anyway. When he was faced with the darkened bottom of a mug, he decided it was high time to take a break and shoved himself away from his desk, moving towards the sink in his apartment so he could set up another pot and wash out his cup. As he did this, he reviewed the case files in his head, even as he turned on the tap and grabbed the sponge on auto-pilot.
At least I managed to avoid a guilty verdict today. That’s something. He thought idly as he slid the sponge over the inside of the mug, not so much as cleaning as spreading the coffee stain around. But if I don’t get him off... it doesn’t really mean much. And therein lay the root of the problem.
He was so... inexperienced compared to his opponent. Barely half a year of cases under his belt against someone who had been prosecuting since he was seventeen. Seventeen! It was ridiculous!
With another sigh, this one louder than the last, Apollo rinsed off his cup and set it to dry while he cleaned out the filter on his coffee machine, frowning and biting his lower lip as he mulled over the facts. Maybe... maybe it was possible he was wrong? His client might be guilty after all...
As soon as he thought that, his mind resolutely shoved the possibility away. No, that wasn’t true. His client was innocent, he believed in that and he believed in him. He just wasn’t looking hard enough or in the right places.
As the light of his machine beeped on and the gurgling noise of filtered water began, Apollo leaned back against the kitchen counter and considered things again. Reminded of his client’s innocence and his own moment of weakness had woken him up far better than any cup of joe could. He felt annoyed that he could have thought such a thing, just because he was tired! That wasn’t doing his client justice!
“And he deserves justice,” Apollo muttered, aware of the play on his own name but thinking of other things. Why did that remind him of something? Something vaguely familiar...?
Suddenly he was speeding off, back towards his desk and pushing aside inconsequential reports and files to find a newspaper clip he’d been given earlier in the day by Phoenix.
Did he know? Apollo wondered as he seized the article clipping and pulled it free, eyes eagerly scanning the words the coffee machine gurgled out a last drop and was ignored. As he started piecing the bits together, the sporadic witness’s testimony, the oddities of the murder weapon, a slow grin formed on his lips. This... this could work. He thought, before pausing.
Knowing Klavier, Apollo would never prove this without a fight.
But there is a way, what if I compared it with... and he dove back into the pile, forgetting all about his coffee and his uncertainty as he latched onto the thread of truth he had found.
Okay, Klavier. He comes Justice!
